Media Plan Institute, in cooperation with the BiH public broadcasting service and BETA agency from Belgrade and with the support of the embassies of France in Sarajevo and Belgrade and the French regional audiovisual office, is organizing education for 10 young journalists working in TV newsrooms of public broadcasting services in BiH and BETA agency in Serbia to train them to work in TV production. The two-week education consists of camera filming technique, basic TV editing, and construction of short TV item – everything in symbiosis with practical exercises.
Today the appearance of digital equipment and DV format allows newsrooms in some cases to reduce the TV crew to just one member: journalist/cameraman. This concept was created in the 1970s thanks to the efforts of a number of television journalists in France and was then taken over by people responsible for education on TV channels and in journalism schools. Newsrooms that decide to educate journalists with a dual qualification will be able to work more efficiently and with higher quality.
Video exercises during the course will be based on coverage of diversities in Sarajevo, which are especially intertwined in this city, sometimes with impressive tolerance, but in different phases in history also with evident intolerance.
As a foundation, education will be preceded by monitoring and analysis of primetime news programs on public services. The sample will consist of news programs on BHT (BiH) and RTS (Serbia) over a period of 14 days. The analysis will have the following variables:
- Thematic representation in the program
- News forms
- Specifics of using image
- Insight into how many items are made by a cameraman – journalist team and how many items are produced by a video journalist.
The analysis will be presented and distributed to participants at the start of training, posted on the Media Plan Institute website, and sent to the editors of BHT, RTS and BETA agency. This will be a unique report, basically serving to correct the editorial and technical structure of the public services.
