SUCCESSFUL 2007

Media Plan Institute marked the successful completion of activities
in the year 2007 at a ceremony for employees and associates. The
Media Plan Analysis and Education Center positioned itself in
the media public with a new project which will constitute Media
Plan’s long-term orientation. It is the multimedia project “Diversity
Dialogue,” which consisted of education modules for journalism
students and young journalists, media analysis and research, and
TV and radio production. Media Plan successfully joined the community
of independent radio and television productions, producing 20
radio shows and five TV shows that were aired on the Public Broadcasting
Service and local radio and television stations in BiH and the
region. Publishing activity was enriched with two new books. In
collaboration with the association Media Initiatives, a conference
was organized on “Cultural Policies and Opportunities for Great
Cultural Cooperation among Public Broadcasting Services in Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia.” In strong competition with a
large number of consulting organizations, a consortium comprising
ESJ Lille, MCG Paris, Naturex London and Media Plan Sarajevo won
a European Union tender for standardization of news and archives
of the Public Broadcasting Service of BiH.
Press Clipping and the sector of technical services for organizing
conferences expanded the scope of their services. To quote Media
Plan Institute President Zoran Udovicic, the majority of media
projects in 2008 will be motivated by the European Year of Intercultural
Dialogue and the role of the media in creating a public environment
for sustainable ecological development. A school of modern video
journalism will also open.

In the framework of the project, along with education for leaders
of Roma organizations, a total of 14 radio shows were produced:

BOOK “INFORMERS WITH DIFFERENT GOALS” PROMOTED
The book “Public Relations and Journalism: Informers with Different
Goals” written by Radenko Udovicic, Media Plan Institute Program
Director, was promoted in early January. Technical literature
in BiH for the first time was enriched with a book which in one
place offers different correlations of using journalistic techniques
in PR, as well as traps that journalists and media may encounter
under the influence of the rising PR sector in our country.
The book promoter Zinaida Babovic, PR Director for the Bosnalijek
company, emphasized that the book’s particular value is that it
gives PR practitioners a theoretical and communication framework
for their field of activity in a relatively simple way using examples
from BiH.
Amela Odobasic, Head of Communications Regulatory Agency Information
Sector, said PR in Bosnia-Herzegovina has been advancing constantly
for the past 10 years, but she regrets that a book of this kind
had to be awaited so long. “I hope this will serve as an additional
impetus for this field to be researched, examined and publicized,”
said Odobasic.
04 PRODUCTION
OF TV SHOWS
In 2007 Media Plan Institute produced a series of four television
shows in the framework of a project implemented in collaboration
with Germany’s Heinrich Boll Foundation.
Four issues were covered – “International Community in BiH: The
Master Who Isn’t That,” “Green – The Color of the Future” (show
on overcoming ethno-national policies in BiH and the region),
“BiH Constitution between Individual and Collective Rights” and
“Lost in Transition,” on the generation of BiH citizens born between
1968 and 1974.
The shows were broadcast on public services in BiH and numerous
commercial and local television stations.

RESEARCH RESULTS: SECURITY IN BIH MEDIA
In September 2007 a Media Plan Institute and Media Initiatives
research team monitored BiH and regional media to see in what
way they cover security issues in the context of Euro-Atlantic
integrations.
The main hypothesis prior to research, which was done in September,
was: “Security is a precondition for Euro-Atlantic integrations.”
Out intent was to examine and see show BiH media treated this
assertion, whether they affirmed it, denied it, or entirely ignored
it.
The partner of the project was Banja-Luka based Center for International
Relations, the authors of the analysis were Davor Marko and Tatjana
Ljubic, and the results were publicly presented during conferences
in Banja Luka on November 29 and Sarajevo on December 12, 2007.
The full analysis is available on out website: http://www.mediaonline.ba/ba/

ECOLOGY AND MEDIA: “WE ARE ALL TRITONS!”
“Time
is slowly running out for Prokosko Lake and its best-known inhabitant,
the endemic species ‘triton,’ has not been seen for almost two
years. Let us help the lake, let us help nature and let us advance
engaged journalism in the field of ecology,” states the conclusion
of a three-day seminar on “Ecology and Media: Broad Range of Sustainable
Development,” held in Fojnica on September 21-23 and organized
by Media Plan Institute and Heinrich Boll Foundation.
Fifteen journalists from different BiH newsrooms visited Fojnica,

INTERNSHIPS: CHILDREN’S RIGHTS AND MEDIA
Media
Plan Institute, with the support of the French region of Auvergne,
is starting a series of internships for final year journalism
students from the former Yugoslavia. This is initial practical
education for students in media and journalistic forms during
which they will receive useful know-how complementary to university
education, as well as skills that will help them prepare better
for working in a professional environment.
Each internship will have a specific theme, which will be an
impetus for research, processing information and creating a final
news product. The lecturers will be journalists with experience
in conveying know-how to students and young journalists during
the nine years of existence of the Media Plan High College of
Journalism.
The first of three 11-day internships will cover the theme “Media
and Children’s Rights.” Students will be acquainted with the legislative
framework and practical challenges in protection of children’s
rights, with emphasis on media obligations regarding this issue.
In the production part, the internship participants will cover
the issue through a series of TV stories, taking care to make
them informational, interesting, but also professionally correct.

RESEARCH: DOES THE GREEN OPTION HAVE A CHANCE IN BIH?
Any
political option that essentially proceeds from individual (civil),
not collective rights of man (rights of groups and constituent
peoples), which offers realistic programs, which advocates rule
of experts and know-how rather than names, which insists on self-sustainable
development and environment protection, which realistically stresses
the importance of education, long-term development strategies…
may be considered a ‘green option.’
In the research, which will be implemented by Media Plan Institute,
we will examine how much the stands of potential voters in BiH
are firm in terms of voting always for the same option, usually
an ethnic one. The general goal of the project is to give reformist
and alternative political forces in BiH insight into voter disposition
toward the key issues of the so-called Green Option in order to
add to or correct existing political programs and promote an offering
of ideas and actions that are not sufficiently developed in BiH
or have been completely neglected up until now. The research should
also offer a stimulus to unengaged intellectual forces for institutional
activity in the sense of creating a new political party or becoming
involved in different areas of civil action.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with Germany’s
Heinrich Boll Foundation and will result in a publication.

cooperation with Heinrich Boll Foundation from Germany. After
succesfull cooperation in 2007, in this year we planned production
of three 25-minute TV shows on topics: «Issue of segregation in
BiH schools», «Energy policy in BiH and European integration process»,
and «Issue of active participation of women in society».

won a European Union tender and in December 2007 started implementing
the 18-month project.
